Our MISSION: 1) Prevent human trafficking & 2) Help youth navigate in a media-driven society

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

  • Human trafficking is modern-day slavery
  • There are an estimated 27M human trafficking victims worldwide, 1M in America
  • Of the 1M victims in America, 300,000+ are child sex trafficking victims
  • Much of today’s media, especially teen pop culture, promotes hypersexuality and casual promiscuity– two dangerous behaviors that increase vulnerability to sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of a child (CSEC)
  • The average teenager consumes 11+ hours of media a day– Internet, TV, music, magazines, video games, movies, billboards, you name it
  • Increasingly, traffickers are using social media, young female recruiters, modeling schemes and advanced recruitment strategies to trap teens into commercial sexual exploitation
  • Too many people are unaware of sex trafficking in America and the dangers targeting our precious youth

THE LINK BETWEEN SEX TRAFFICKING & MEDIA INFLUENCE
Media Influence Education and Sex Trafficking Prevention are closely linked:

  • Oversexualization of models ages 8-17;
  • Violence against women in movies, TV and songs;
  • Glorification of pimps in pop culture;
  • Hypersexual singers and actresses who girls look up to as role models.

Here’s a great article by Holly Austin Smith (Washington Times) further explaining the link between sex trafficking and media influence: http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/speaking-out/2012/jun/19/importance-media-literacy-preventing-child-sex-tra/#ixzz2RB2NYTpR
